With its 50 miles of rugged coastline and more than 42,000 acres of sweeping valleys, rocky hillsides, and oak-covered plateaus, Catalina Island has long been one of Southern California’s most popular natural attractions. After Hans Albrecht and friends needed a place to train for the strenuous Western States 100, the Catalina Island Marathon was born in 1978. Now with three major annual running event weekends: the Avalon 50K/50M Benefit Run in January, Catalina Island Marathon in March, and Catalina Island Half Marathon in November, Catalina Island has become an ideal destination for endurance athletes.
Runners can find events on Catalina Island that suit their every need. For off-road and trail lovers, the Catalina Island Marathon and Half Marathon offer spectacular views and beautiful scenery amidst rugged terrain. For ultra-marathon runners, the Avalon 50 Benefit Run is one of the country’s most challenging and scenic 50K and 50M. Athletes looking to enjoy Avalon’s landmarks can participate in the Catalina Island 10K and 5K.

Stretching out of the vast lands of the Catalina Island Conservancy, Run Catalina gives the opportunity to run in the island’s interior and experience beautiful views of the coastline and wildlife sightings in remote locations along its trails.

Catalina is one of the hardest yet most rewarding runs with its rugged terrain and elevation gain. Its uphill battles are eventually met with the satisfying downhill descent into Avalon accompanied by the best cool down in the Pacific Ocean.

Unlike crowded road races with cups all over the ground, Run Catalina offers environmentally sustainable and socially responsible events. The races are cupless and runners are encouraged to do their part to keep the island pristine.
Wildlife Sightings
Catalina Island is home to more than 60 plant and animal species found on Catalina and nowhere else in the world. Along the scenic dirt roads keep a lookout for island endemic plants and animals such as bison and the Catalina fox.
